Become an energy trader in your own home with battery storage

Battery systems in homes and businesses are no longer used solely for backup or on-site consumption. They are increasingly becoming active participants in the energy market.

With intelligent control, a battery can take advantage of fluctuations in electricity prices throughout the day, creating genuine financial value. In simple terms, it involves storing electricity when prices are low — or even negative — and discharging it when prices are higher. This mechanism is known as energy arbitrage.
From passive storage to active optimisation
Traditionally, batteries have served a single purpose: storing surplus generation from solar PV for later use. However, in a dynamic electricity market where prices can vary significantly from hour to hour, a new opportunity emerges.
By combining electricity prices, solar generation, consumption patterns and battery capacity, the system can make decisions that maximise value over the course of the day — rather than within a single hour.
A real-world example
On 23 March 2025, we analysed the operation of one of our Danish customers over a 24-hour period.
The system exported approximately 25 kWh to the market at times of favourable prices, primarily during the morning and again in the evening, when demand is higher. Over the same period, just under 2 kWh was imported from the grid.
The result was a net revenue of approximately DKK 35 over the course of the day.

The detailed breakdown
Export (Sales):
Time | Energy | Price (DKK/kWh) | Revenue |
06:00 | approx. 5 kWh | 1,28 | DKK 6,40 |
07:00 | approx. 10 kWh | 1,31 | DKK 13,10 |
Evening | approx. 10 kWh | 1,93 | DKK 19,30 |
Total revenue amounted to DKK 38.80.
Omport (Purchases):
Energy | Price (DKK/kWh) | Cost |
approx. 2 kWh | 2,45 | DKK 4,90 |
The net revenue for the 24-hour period was therefore DKK 33.90, after deducting DKK 4.90 for electricity imports.
Now imagine this happening every day, all year round. We are not quite there yet — but we are already seeing it occur several times a week.
Ultimately, this is not just about technology, but about taking advantage of a fundamental shift in the energy market.
